A PALO SECO

Deemed by the critics as “awesomely fiery” (New York Times), “masterful” (Eva YaaAsantewaa), “a fierce performer” (Explore Dance), and “a postcard image of the feminine Flamenco dancer” (Kansas City Metropolis), Rebeca is one of New York City’s up and coming Flamenco artists. After years of freelancing as a solo dancer and company performer with such companies as Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca and Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana, she is now focused on directing and choreographing her own original works. Her productions of A Palo Seco and Rasgos Flamencos have been hailed as “a feast for the eyes and the ears” (Lindsay Miller, Theater On-Line) and “Flamenco with Soulfulness and a Burst of Springtime” (Gia Kourlas, New York Times).

Tomás has received such grants and awards as the Artist Fellowship Grant from the CT Commission on Culture & Tourism, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s MCAF Grant, the Jerome Foundation's Travel and Study Grant (two-time recipient), a scholarship from the School at Jacob’s Pillow, and first place award in the XIII Concurso Nacional de Flamenco in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Choreography credits assistant choreographer for Lincoln Center’s production of Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, guest choreographer for R.evolución Latina’s Choreographer’s Festival and presentation at the Broadway Cares 25th Annual Easter Bonnet Competition.

Rebeca began her formal dance training in Granada, Spain at Maite Galán’s Escuela de Danza Española. She later moved to Madrid, where she studied at the internationally renowned Flamenco Academy Amor de Dios under such figures as Maria Magdalena, La China, Manuel Liñán, and Rafaela Carrasco. There she appeared at various tablaos, including Al Andalus and Las Carboneras. She has also studied in Sevilla with Juana Amaya, Pastora Galván, and Yolanda Heredia.
